Isleworth Removals Health and Safety Policy
Isleworth Removals is committed to ensuring the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with lifting, carrying, driving, loading, unloading and working in homes, offices and commercial premises across our service areas.
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and harm to the environment by managing our operations in a planned and responsible way.
Responsibilities and Commitment
The senior management of Isleworth Removals accepts overall responsibility for health and safety and will provide adequate resources to implement and maintain this policy. Managers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that safe systems of work are followed and that staff have the information, instruction and training they need to work safely.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must cooperate with management, follow training and safety guidance, use equipment correctly and report any hazards, near misses, accidents or unsafe conditions immediately.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out risk assessments for our key activities, including domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, unloading and storage operations. These assessments consider hazards such as manual handling, slips and trips, use of vehicles, working on or near roads, falls from height when accessing vehicles and handling large or awkward items.
Based on these risk assessments, we implement safe systems of work that may include job planning, use of appropriate equipment, team lifting, route planning, customer communication and clear site access arrangements. Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment or work locations.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Staff receive training on safe lifting techniques, correct posture, load assessment and teamwork when lifting large or heavy items.
Where reasonable and practical, we use handling aids such as sack trucks, dollies, furniture sliders, removal straps and ramps to minimise physical strain. Employees must inspect equipment before use, report defects and never use damaged or unsafe equipment. Heavy or awkward items are only moved by suitably trained staff using appropriate methods and adequate manpower.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
We operate vehicles that are suitable for removal work and maintain them to a high standard. Regular checks and servicing are carried out to ensure roadworthiness, including brakes, lights, tyres, loading equipment and securing points.
Drivers must hold the appropriate valid licence for the vehicle they operate and comply with road traffic legislation at all times. They are responsible for carrying out daily vehicle checks, reporting defects and ensuring that loads are evenly distributed, properly secured and within legal weight limits.
Journey planning takes into account traffic conditions, access restrictions, parking, loading and unloading arrangements to minimise risks to staff, customers and the public. Drivers must never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that may impair safe driving. Fatigue is managed through sensible scheduling and rest breaks.
Customer Premises and Site Safety
Our teams frequently work in customers homes, offices and commercial premises. We take care to protect people and property in every location where we operate. Upon arrival, team leaders will consider access routes, stairs, lifts, doorways, parking areas and any site-specific hazards such as low ceilings, uneven floors or slippery surfaces.
Protective measures may include the use of floor coverings, corner protectors, furniture blankets and safe stacking methods. We aim to keep access routes clear, avoid blocking fire exits and minimise trip hazards from tools, packaging and equipment. Where necessary, we will discuss with the customer any adjustments needed to maintain a safe working environment.
Training, Information and Supervision
All employees receive induction training on health and safety, including our policies, safe working practices, emergency procedures and reporting requirements. Role-specific training is provided for drivers, team leaders and staff using specialist equipment.
Training covers topics such as manual handling, use of handling aids, vehicle safety, loading and unloading, personal protective equipment and dealing with challenging or confined access. Refresher training is provided at appropriate intervals and when new equipment, processes or risks are introduced.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring working practices on site and intervening where unsafe behaviour or conditions are identified.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, injuries and near misses must be reported as soon as reasonably practicable to a manager or supervisor. We maintain accident records and investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Emergency arrangements include procedures for fire, serious injury, vehicle incidents and sudden illness while on site or on the road. Staff are briefed on how to respond, how to contact emergency services and how to communicate with the company so that support can be provided quickly.
Welfare, Personal Protective Equipment and Wellbeing
We recognise the importance of staff welfare and wellbeing in maintaining a safe and effective removal service. Suitable personal protective equipment, such as safety footwear, gloves and high-visibility clothing where appropriate, is provided and must be used in accordance with training and instructions.
We seek to manage workload, lifting demands and working hours to reduce fatigue and stress. Staff are encouraged to raise any health concerns that may affect their ability to perform physical tasks safely, so that suitable adjustments can be considered.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains suitable, adequate and effective for our removal activities and service areas. Reviews take into account changes in legislation, industry best practice, feedback from staff and lessons learned from incidents.
Isleworth Removals is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. By working together, following agreed procedures and maintaining clear communication, we aim to provide a safe, professional and reliable removals service for every customer.
